I am thrilled to share that Orion Homes is expanding our footprint by opening our 15th location in North Phoenix. This 10-bed home for women marks a significant milestone for our organization and reaffirms our commitment to providing exceptional care to individuals with high-acuity serious mental illness (SMI) in need of residential behavioral health care.

 

At Orion Homes, our mission has always been centered around creating an environment of safety, stability, and healing for those facing mental health challenges. With our team’s extensive experience and expertise in this field, we understand the unique needs of individuals with high-acuity SMI. We’re excited to provide comprehensive care that supports their journey to recovery at this new home.

Disability Pride Month, observed every July, provides a significant opportunity to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and challenges of the disability community. Why July? It marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a groundbreaking legislation signed into law on July 26th, 1990 by President George HW Bush, aimed at dismantling barriers and promoting inclusion in society. While progress has been made, it is crucial to acknowledge and support individuals with disabilities, their unique identities, and the diverse range of support they require to thrive.

 

Statistics reveal that at least 25% of American adults have a condition classified as a disability, even though only a fraction of them self-identify as disabled. Disability is an integral part of human diversity, and it is likely that most of us will experience disability in some form during our lives. It is an identity that shapes how individuals perceive and navigate the world. Unfortunately, people with disabilities have endured marginalization and misconceptions for generations. It is essential to recognize and respect all disabilities, along with the intersecting identities that individuals with disabilities may hold. One way to achieve this is by observing and participating in Disability Pride Month.

 

When we envision disability, we may immediately picture someone in a wheelchair, as it is the symbol commonly associated with disability, seen on parking spots and restroom doors throughout our communities. Let Disability Pride Month challenge you to broaden your perspective. Each person's experience of disability is unique, with many chronic illnesses being invisible to the casual observer. Disability encompasses various physical and mental conditions, such as cerebral palsy and bipolar disorder. It includes common conditions like chronic back pain and rare conditions like narcolepsy. Disabilities can be visible like Down syndrome or invisible like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In fact, most disabilities are invisible. Despite the differences across disabilities, one common experience shared by people with disabilities is ableism—an entrenched prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination against individuals with disabilities.

 

Throughout history, people with disabilities have faced segregation, discrimination, and violations of their basic human rights. Sadly, there remains a prevailing cultural shame surrounding disability. Being open about one's disability is often seen as "brave" because of the tangible fear of being treated differently on interpersonal or professional levels. Identifying with a disability is frequently associated with notions of limitation or weakness. That’s why the misguided compliment "I don't think of you as disabled” is so common. Disability is not inherently negative—it simply exists as a form of human variation, much like different hair colors.

 

People with disabilities have dreams and aspirations like anyone else, including social inclusion and employment opportunities. All bodies and minds are unique and essential, and all bodies and minds have strengths and needs that must be met.

 

Here are a few actionable ways to engage during Disability Pride Month:

 

1.       Attend Disability Pride Events: Look for local events dedicated to Disability Pride Month and participate in them. These events may include parades, workshops, panel discussions, art exhibitions, or performances that celebrate the achievements and contributions of the disability community. Emanuel Cham, Emanuel is very hard working. He is always willing to help out when needed and is willing to learn. Emanuel deserves my vote for Employee of the Month. We feel honored to have you on the Orion team, Emanuel!

Joyce Cue, She is always willing to help out with residents appointments and medication. She is willing to help out with anything and learn from anything. She deserves my vote. We feel so very lucky to have you, Joyce!

Lastly, Isaac Alimu, Isaac has been closely observed the entire month for his unwavering dedication and compassion to care for our residents. He always goes above and beyond expectations. He always comes to shift on time and communicates anything needed. He is always willing to help other houses when coverage is needed. Mr. Alimu never hesitates to assist either residents or staff when assistance is needed. He has an amazing positive and constructive interactions with our residents. Mr. Alimu treats everyone with respect and maintains his personal integrity and boundaries with residents and staff. With that being said he deserves Employee of the Month. June is National Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, an excellent opportunity to discuss lifestyle changes that can help lower your risk of Alzheimer's and promote cognitive health. By incorporating these changes into your daily routine, you can take proactive steps towards maintaining brain health and reducing the likelihood of cognitive decline.

 

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases. Approximately 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s today, and more than 500,000 new cases are diagnosed in the US each year. While there is currently no known cure for Alzheimer's, research suggests that certain lifestyle modifications can play a significant role in reducing the risk and delaying the onset of this devastating disease.

 

1.       Physical Exercise: Engaging in regular physical exercise is not only beneficial for your body but also for your brain. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, promotes the growth of new neurons, and enhances cognitive function. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling. For example, taking a brisk walk for 30 minutes, five times a week, can improve brain health and lower the risk of cognitive decline.

 

2.       Healthy Diet: Consuming a balanced and nutritious diet is essential for brain health. Include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (such as fatty fish like salmon or trout), antioxidants (found in colorful fruits and vegetables like berries and spinach), and vitamin E (present in nuts and seeds). Avoid excessive intake of saturated and trans fats, as they can contribute to cognitive decline. For instance, incorporating a handful of walnuts or almonds into your daily snack routine provides essential nutrients for brain health.

 

3.       Mental Stimulation: Keeping your brain active and engaged can help build cognitive reserves and improve neural connections. Challenge yourself with puzzles, crosswords, reading, learning new skills, or participating in mentally stimulating activities. Stay curious and seek opportunities for lifelong learning. For example, joining a book club or learning a new instrument can provide regular mental stimulation.

 

4.       Quality Sleep: Prioritize a good night's sleep to support brain health. During sleep, your brain consolidates memories and removes waste products that can contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. Aim for 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night and establish a relaxing bedtime routine. Creating a comfortable sleep environment and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can contribute to better brain health and cognitive function.

 

5.       Social Engagement: Maintaining social connections and participating in meaningful social activities can help protect against cognitive decline. Stay socially active by spending time with loved ones, joining community groups, volunteering, or engaging in group activities that stimulate your mind and foster connections. For instance, participating in community events, volunteering at local organizations, or joining a hobby group can promote social engagement and support cognitive health.

 

6.       Stress Management: Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on the brain and increase the risk of cognitive decline. Explore stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, deep breathing exercises, and engaging in hobbies or activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Practicing stress-management techniques like mindfulness meditation or yoga can help reduce the impact of stress on brain health.

 

7.       Heart-Healthy Habits: What's good for the heart is good for the brain. Adopt heart-healthy habits such as maintaining a healthy weight, managing blood pressure, controlling cholesterol levels, and avoiding smoking. These factors contribute to optimal brain function and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. For example, regular cardiovascular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking can help protect both heart health and brain health.

 

Small changes today can make a significant impact on your brain health tomorrow. Taking proactive steps to prevent cognitive decline and lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease is within our control. By incorporating simple lifestyle changes such as regular physical exercise, a healthy diet, mental stimulation, quality sleep, social engagement, stress management, and heart-healthy habits, we can promote brain health and potentially prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer's.

Sinh Tran, a truly dedicated certified caregiver that goes above and beyond everyday for our residents. He always takes the time to listen, understand, and interact with our residents. He is thorough when completing assigned tasks. You can truly count on Sinh with anything needed. We are so proud to have you apart of the team, Sinh!

Omosunmbo Amaechi, a hard working certified caregiver. Amaechi always takes the time every morning to make sure breakfast is made before the next shift. She goes above and beyond in her work. She always makes sure that our residents safety and needs are met and kept her #1 priority. We feel blessed to have you apart of our team, Amaechi!

Lastly, Elissa Posey, a dedicated and hard working certified caregiver. She always takes responsibility of her job duties and makes sure they are completed. She always puts our residents first by, making sure their rooms are clean, laundry is done, and house is neat. She has great communicating skills with manager and coordinator by voicing anything concerning our residents. She assists with ADLS anytime needed. She makes working with easy because, she is always willing to help her workmates and always welcomes new staff with love. We feel so lucky to have you as a part of the team, Elissa!

We were the top-ranked Behavioral Health Residential Facility on this year’s list. This recognition is a true testament to the tireless work and dedication of our entire team, and we feel incredibly honored to be counted among the top behavioral rehabilitation organizations in the state.

Roseline Ukaegbu, a fantastic certified caregiver. She goes above and beyond for our residents and is a true pleasure to work with. She is always pleasant with both staff and residents. Gabriel Chuol, a hard working caregiver every day of the week. He always makes sure to put our residents as his #1 priority and is always there to attend to our residents needs. He is always willing to pick up extra shifts and work at any other homes when extra assistance is needed. “There is no doubt that he shouldn’t get this award.” We are honored to have him as a part of our Orion team!

 

Last but not least, Yvonne Umulisa, our third Employee of the Month winner, she has been recognized as hard working and always willing to help out when our residents are in need of anything.
